Pressure injuries continue to be a serious concern in aged care, especially for residents with limited mobility or complex health conditions. In 2023–24, more than 299,000 Australians accessed aged care services, many of whom are vulnerable to skin breakdown and related complications⁽¹⁾. These injuries can lead to prolonged care needs, increased health risks, and costs of over $56,000 per case⁽²⁾.

Preventing pressure injuries is an important part of providing dignified, person-centred care. Frequent repositioning can be physically demanding for care teams and uncomfortable for residents, particularly those living with dementia or unable to move independently. Thoughtful prevention approaches—including early risk screening, individualised care planning, and appropriate support surfaces—can help protect both residents’ wellbeing and carers’ capacity to provide quality care ^(2,5).

At Crescent Healthcare, we’re proud to offer the CuroCell iA^®, an advanced pressure care system designed to support more personalised and safer care in aged care environments. Using artificial intelligence, CuroCell iA^® continuously monitors pressure across the contact area and automatically responds in real time. It recognises a resident’s weight and height and can detect subtle changes, such as a shift in position.

The AI-based control unit has been developed to enhance safety while enabling clinicians to deliver truly personal care. If a new posture results in increased pressure, the system responds by adjusting individual air cells to improve distribution. This intelligent response helps reduce the need for frequent manual repositioning and eases the physical demands placed on care teams, while supporting resident comfort and protection.

CuroCell iA^® uses artificial intelligence to constantly monitor pressure across the patient’s contact area and calculates its response.

The system identifies the patient’s weight and height and can detect changes, such as when the patient adopts a new position.

The AI-based CuroCell iA^® control unit was developed with the aim to improve patient safety and allow professionals to provide a new level of personal care.

Should a patient’s new posture result in excessive pressure, CuroCell iA^® will take action, managing individual cells to adjust the contact between the patient and the mattress.

This can reduce the amount of manual repositioning or heavy lifting the care team must undertake.

Moving a patient in order to replace a complete mattress system is arduous for staff and inconvenient and sometimes painful for the patient. With CuroCell iA^®, just the support surface or the control unit can be swapped out when needed.

The result is fewer patient moves, less need to replace equipment sets, simpler inventory and reduced storage requirements.

Overall, this flexibility makes operation simpler and enables a lower total cost of ownership.
